What Thickness Does Melamine MDF Come In? A Complete Thickness Guide

Aug. 20, 2026

When buying melamine MDF, thickness is one of the first specifications that furniture manufacturers, distributors and contractors need to confirm. It affects not only the appearance of the finished product, but also its strength, processing performance, weight and overall cost.

From a factory perspective, there is no single “best” thickness for every application. The right choice depends mainly on how the board will be processed and where it will be used.

Common Thicknesses of Melamine MDF

Melamine-faced MDF is available in a variety of thicknesses. At Risun, standard options include 4.6mm, 5.8mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm and 20mm. Other thicknesses can also be discussed according to project requirements.

Generally, thinner MDF such as 4.6mm, 5.8mm and 9mm is suitable for applications where weight and flexibility are more important. For example, it can be considered for cabinet backs, drawer components, decorative panels and other non-load-bearing parts.

12mm and 15mm MDF offer a balance between weight, strength and processing convenience. They are often suitable for shelves, cabinet components, interior panels and furniture parts where a medium thickness is sufficient.

18mm MDF is one of the most practical choices for furniture manufacturing. It provides a solid feel and good stability, making it suitable for wardrobes, cabinets, shelves, TV cabinets and other common furniture applications.

For projects requiring greater thickness, 20mm and above can provide a heavier appearance and additional structural support. Thick MDF can also be used for special furniture components, countertops or decorative structures, depending on the design and load requirements.

How Should You Choose the Right Thickness?

The first consideration should be the application, rather than simply choosing the thickest board available.

For a cabinet door, for example, the required thickness may depend on the door size, hardware, design and whether the surface needs to be machined or shaped. A large door may require a different specification from a small drawer front.

For shelves, the expected load and shelf span are important. Increasing thickness generally improves stiffness, but board quality, density, support spacing and installation method also affect the final performance.

For decorative wall panels or furniture backs, using a thinner board may reduce weight and material cost without unnecessarily increasing the specification.

There is also a processing factor. Thicker MDF requires appropriate cutting, drilling and edge-processing equipment. Before placing a large order, manufacturers should confirm that the selected thickness works with their existing production process.

Thickness Is Not the Only Specification

A common mistake when purchasing melamine MDF is to focus only on thickness. In actual production, MDF density, moisture resistance, formaldehyde emission level, surface quality and melamine paper finish are also important.

For example, two 18mm boards can perform differently if their core density, bonding quality or manufacturing process is different. The melamine surface also needs to match the intended application in terms of wear resistance, appearance and maintenance requirements.

For humid environments, moisture-resistant MDF may be more appropriate than ordinary MDF. However, moisture-resistant does not mean waterproof, and proper edge sealing remains important in furniture production.

Factory Advice Before Ordering

For wholesalers and furniture manufacturers, we recommend confirming at least five specifications before ordering: thickness, board size, density, environmental standard and surface design.

It is also useful to request samples before purchasing in bulk. This allows you to check cutting performance, surface quality, edge condition and compatibility with your own production process.

At Risun, melamine-faced MDF is available in different thicknesses, sizes, environmental grades and decorative finishes, with customized thickness and density also available for specific requirements.

In short, 18mm is a common choice for general furniture, while thinner and thicker options have their own practical applications. Instead of automatically choosing the thickest board, buyers should select the specification according to the product design, load requirements, processing method and target budget. This approach usually gives a more practical balance between performance and cost.
