In terms of performance, MDF has a more uniform substrate and a smoother surface, making it suitable for furniture requiring intricate carving and finishing. Particleboard is a engineered wood substrate made by crushing wood processing residues and wood chips into particles, applying adhesives, and then hot-pressing them. MFC is made by bonding melamine-impregnated paper to this substrate under high temperature and pressure.

While the particleboard substrate of MFC is not as strong as MDF in bending and tensile strength, MFC boards are more stable overall and less prone to bending and deformation. Melamine MDF is recommended as the first choice for load-bearing structural components.

Both can achieve environmental ratings such as E0, E1, NAF, and F4 stars. Melamine finishes effectively block the release of formaldehyde from the substrate. When purchasing, focusing on the environmental rating label is more important than the substrate type.
